Providing youth with the ability to enhance and develop communication skills is of great importance in Kentucky. The development of communications skills is one of the preeminent skills necessary to grow as an individual, a community member and a leader. This in turn creates a solid foundation for positive youth development (Jones, K. R. 2006)
This year 181 youth participated in State Communications Day. These youth have gained knowledge in public speaking through county and area grouping contests. They have completed research on a topic of their choice, written a speech or demonstration and have presented a speech or demonstration. Of these youth, 168 youth demonstrated effective presentation skills by attaining a blue ribbon, which is a score of 80-100.
Edmonson County 4-H had 4 youth to participate in the State Communications Contest. Our contestants in the Team Demonstration and Digital Media Demonstration received 3rd place overall and received blue ribbons. Our contestant in the 10 year old speech had an honorable showing and received a blue ribbon. This is only the second year any of these competitors have competed in any of the communications contests.
