Volunteers: The Heart of 4-H

Author: Joyce Doyle

Planning Unit: Carroll County CES

Major Program: Community Leadership Development

Plan of Work: Adult and Youth Leadership

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Kentucky Volunteer Forum is planned on a two year cycle.  This year I took fifty four volunteers to the Forum.  I do not take volunteers so that I can be recognized for having the most numbers.  I, personally, am not about numbers but about what these fifty four volunteers do once they return to Carroll County.  Our District Board recognizes the importance of volunteers for the Extension program; therefore they support it financially.

How have these volunteers contributed to the success of our programs?  All of these volunteers were not volunteers for 4-H only, but also volunteer for Agriculuture and Natural Resources and for the Family Consumer Science program.  Since the Forum, 4-H has added a robotics program (20 totally new members to the 4-H program), many new ideas for shooting sports, livestock and horse certification renewal, new projects added in the area of Expressive Arts, more interest in the area of state fair activities (such as cupcake wars), starting a strong cloverbud club, and so much more.  The volunteers appreciate that they have the opportunity to get "professional development" which makes our programs so much stronger.  As we met the week after the Forum and discussed what we can do to expand our programs, we set another meeting date where we will schedule the added activities.
