Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Regular physical activity in children and adolescents is associated with improved bone health, weight status, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, cardiometabolic health, cognition, and reduced risk of depression. Lack of physical activity is a significant risk factor driving the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States. There is also evidence that engaging in physical activity can improve academic performance and other cognitive and memory functions. Exercise also increases the chances of living a longer and healthier life as children who engage in regular physical activity are also more likely to become physically active adults. Rockcastle County 4-H partnered with Rockcastle County Schools and Saving the Children to offer an after-school enrichment opportunity for youth to safely engage in physical activity while learning the basics of endurance running. Rockcastle County 4-H Agent, Alyssa Cox, met with 13 Mt. Vernon Elementary School students every Monday for six weeks.

After the program, 100% of participants were able to identify a nutritious pre-run snack. 100% of the students were also able to demonstrate how to warm up their muscles, how to run at a maintainable pace, and how to control their breathing.
