Sewing for the Day

Author: Katie Mills

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Cultivating community leadership, engagement and pride through educational and experiential learning.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Christian County has some wonderful volunteers that are always wanting to volunteer to help the youth in the county. They want to be able to share their talents with others and help them grow in a new skill. There are many youth in Christian County that want to learn how to skill and were eager to learn how to sew. Sewing is something many youth do not know how to do, but could benefit from it. Whether this includes sewing on a button, hemming pants, or making a bag, it is beneficial to have this skill.

After advertising an all day program for youth to learn how to make an apron or a bag, there were fifteen youth between the ages of 9-18 that signed up and attended. The goal of the program was to teach youth how to use a sewing machine properly, measure and cut materials, and create a finished product. Each were able to successfully do this with the help of the Christian County Master Clothing Volunteer and other expertise sewers. Information was given to the youth on how they could also enter their apron or bag into the Western Kentucky State Fair. We used this day program to also advertise the monthly sewing program that is housed at the Christian County Extension Office.
