Scott County has deep agricultural grass roots. It's heritage is made up of tobacco, beef, and grain farmers. However, Scott County has been drastically changing and growing in recent years. With the influx of commerce, people, and development the dynamic of the county is shifting. This has lead to people becoming more removed from agriculture and the rural way of life. While, farmers are diversifying their products and management strategies to meet the needs of the new environment that they find themselves in. Farm City Field day brings together the rural and urban communities. This event has been a long standing tradition in the county, spanning back 50 years. This years Farm City Field Day was hosted at Elmwood Stock Farms. Industry and university specialists gave talks about organic farming, grass fed poultry, lamb, and beef, and sustainable management practices. Participants also toured the trade show where vendors where set up from all across the state. 200 people attended the 2023 Farm City Field Day. However, many different groups and entities worked on put on this events. The whole Scott County Extension Office staff, Meade Tractor, Great Crossing FFA Chapter, Elmwood Stock Farm, and the numerous sponsors helped to bring this event to life. From this program people gained a better understanding of modern day agriculture. They obtained a deeper understanding of the work that it takes to produce food and how agriculture has been impacted in recent years on a local level. They had a true farm to table experience, which really put into prospective how important agriculture is to their daily lives.
