Plan of Work: Home Horticulture - Community Gardens and Horticulture Therapy

70 third grade students participated in monthly horticulture activities focusing on mindfulness, farm to table, and horticulture science lessons. Students incorporated horticulture therapy lesson linking to mindfulness and knowledge about strategies on breathing techniques to help them focus on school tasks.
In addition, the third grade classes cultivated a social science project for the school season which incorporated youth leadership, horticulture sciences, and team building exercises. They identified a school need to incorporate ADA accessible playground equipment on their school playground for all friends to have the same outdoor experience. As a result, they wanted to do a fund raiser to help offset some of the renovation cost. We collaborated with Fort Thomas Farmers market and local organic vegetable farmer Eric Keef to grow, care, and sell micro green at the farmers market to raise money. To prepare for market, we reviewed basic economics such as supply and demand, pricing, money handling basics and safe food handling process. Students met with a local engineering company to provide them with the needs and desires they want to see to be included in the playground. Students also presented their idea to the school board. Students shared how they will be selling micro-greens at the local farmer’s market to help offset some costs. Students raised over $1700 selling their fresh micro-greens that will go towards the school ADA playground project.
They students gained horticulture science, leadership skills, and basic business and marketing knowledge. Teachers and parents have shared how students have really taken ownership of this project which has increased their desire to learn more, stay focused, and become better leaders.
