Major Program: Urban Environments (water issues)

Plan of Work: Gree nand Sustainable Living

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Homeowners have few unbiased resources when looking for solutions to lawn and garden problems. Many automatically turn to applications of chemicals or fertilizers that may not be necessary for treatment or consult local businesses that are motivated to sell products. Excess products ultimately become groundwater contaminants contributing to pollution concerns. Greener gardening practices was identified as an area where Fayette County residents need education in a recent county assessment.
The Fayette County horticulture program provides sampling, education, and diagnostic services to help residents make greener, environmentally sound decisions. In many cases disease or insect problems have no immediate remedy or do not require treatment. Proper advice and education not only protect the environment but also can save homeowners from unnecessary expenditures. In the past year the Fayette County Horticulture program provided diagnostic advice, educational information or soil testing recommendations to over 20,000 residents. The positive impact on the environment and the savings incurred are a significant benefit not only to the immediate recipients but all residents of Fayette County.
