Livestock Risk Protection Insurance Extension Programming

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) Insurance has been available for many years to Kentucky producers. LRP is a USDA-Risk Management Agency insurance product that allows livestock producers to protect themselves from declining values for cattle, hogs, and other livestock species. Over the last few years, significant changes were made to this insurance program including an increase in the premium subsidy levels and a more producer-friendly premium payment timeline. These changes have made LRP much more attractive, and utilization of this risk management product has greatly increased as a result.
With the increased interest in LRP as a risk management tool, came additional needs for educational programming for stakeholders. So, this became one of the thrusts of my Extension program during 2022 / 2023. Extension LRP programs delivered by me included an overview of the program, an illustration of its use for margin operations including multiple price outcome scenarios and how utilization of LRP would have impacted profitability, and discussion LRP within a broader risk management plan. This type of programming was included as part of the Mid-South Stocker Conference, incorporated into the Backgrounding / Stocker Profitability Conferences, and was delivered at several county and multi-county Extension programs from July 2022 to June 2023. In total, this program was delivered at 13 different locations during this time, reaching a total of 591 producers directly. A YouTube video was also posted of my presentation at Mid-South Stocker Conference that has been viewed more than 200 times.
