In today’s society many youth struggle with stress, anxiety and depression due to circumstances at home, social media factors, peer groups and other aspects. Mental health awareness has become more common in recent years than ever before. School leaders, parents and other leaders in in the community are looking for avenues for opportunities and encouragement for our youth. Luckily, the Cooperative Extension Offices across the state of Kentucky offer a variety of 4-H youth programs that foster positive youth development through belonging, mastery interdependence and generosity.

Although many local 4-H programs help youth reduce stress, anxiety and depression, studies have shown “art promotes  positive self-esteem and mental health by allowing children to truly be themselves without judgment” (Michigan State University Extension, 2016). Clay County 4-H, along with a local teacher, established a 4-H Art Club for the first time at Red Bird Christian School. 4th-12th grade students worked on a variety of art projects ranging from sketching self-portraits, acrylic paintings, mixed media, and various other projects. The 4-H agent and club leader organized for students to participant in the 4-H Art Showcase at the end of the school year. Sixty art pieces were entered and excitement and encouragement were shared among students from all grades. Several projects will be showcased on the county level and Kentucky State Fair.

By participating in the 4-H Art Club, students were able to be creative, participate in a new opportunity, and help reduce daily stresses through art projects. Clay County 4-H looks forward to expanding the Art Club and continuing the local Art Showcase for the upcoming year.
