Plan of Work: Leaders Develop and Expand Leadership Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Leadership Boyle County program was formed by the Chamber in 1983 as a non-profit leadership program designed to further the development of the talents and energies of Boyle County’s present and future leaders. As part of this program, participants spend a day learning about the variety of agricultural and natural resource enterprises throughout the county. The Boyle County Extension Agents planned a full day exploring agriculture and its effects on the community.

Sixteen leaders toured and experienced farms ranging from a thousand acres producing commodity crop seed, to smaller family farms, specializing in horticulture crops and beef cattle. The local wildlife refuge was also visited to discuss the role natural resources have in the local community and the commodities these types of areas supply.

After the tours, leaders participated in a food equitability activity to better understand how poverty and food deserts affect Boyle Co. citizens and discussed how they can support the ag industries that help feed the local community.

At the beginning of the day, 50% of participants could not name an agricultural product that was grown or produced in Boyle County. By the end of the day, every participant could name not only a product but a farm where it was produced.
