Jackson County is one of the poorest counties in Kentucky and even the nation. Having access to nutritious food is limited in this county. Jackson county Agents worked with producers to keep the farmers market running for 2023. This year, the SNFP program has allowed for over $17,000 to be given to 350 low income seniors in order for them to be able to purchase fresh and healthy food from the farmers market. This also provides over $17,000 to local farmers that are selling produce at the farmers market. Grand opening day there were over 400 participants at the market. they were able to buy locally grown food and children were given the opportunity to receive special tokens to buy five dollar’s worth of produce with special tokens through save the children. The Jackson County Cattlemen's association sold over $500 worth of hamburgers as a fundraiser and most vendors were sold out by 2p.m. This success set the stage for a great market year in Jackson county and has allowed access to healthy food for many underserved and underprivileged audiences.
