Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Improve Livestock Production and Management Skills
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The problem- A need for permanent livestock identification for beef farmers.
The educational program response- The Rockcastle and Pulaski county extension offices offered a program on freeze branding cattle to the counties beef producers. The program consisted of discussion of tools needed for branding and a live demo of how to brand cattle with branding irons. Different methods of branding was discussed as well as why we chose to freeze brand. It was also discussed how to have a farm brand and how to register it for proof of ownership. We showed tines and how different ages of animals required different methods of branding. We also briefly discussed the EID tags and how new rules were in effect.

Program impact or participant response. The program was well received by all 34 participants. Many questions were answered while the live demo was taking place. Several participants had some knowledge of freeze branding and wanted to increase their skills. 3 other participants are planning to fully implement freeze branding their entire herd. Since the program has taken place 2 other producers have asked for help in buying the right equipment and wanting further instructions for implementing branding on their operation.
