Cooperative Extension is sometimes referred to as the "best kept secret in our communities." In Nelson we consider this unacceptable and make a lot of effort to keep our organization in the forefront of our community. In 2012 we partnered with one of the local radio stations to begin a twice monthly radio show called "Extension Today". This show reaches about 3000 listeners at each live broadcast and is then re-aired as a television show the remainder of the week. This year we also began to air "Extension Briefs" on the radio's sister FM station twice daily. These are 1 minute timely topic updates and reach about 6000 people at each broadcast. Our Facebook page has about 2800 followers and has become an essential tool for program information dissemination. I send out 830 newsletter for Agriculture six times per year and 1200 newsletters for Horticulture six times per year. Throughout the year we have three different television stations cover our events and conduct interviews on various topics.
It is not our goal to be a secret and we make a lot of effort to be in view of the public we serve.
