Winter Annual Weed Control and ID

Author: Lyndall Harned

Planning Unit: Boyd County CES

Major Program: Integrated Pest Management

Plan of Work: Forage, Crop and General Agricultural Practices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In response to a phone call to the office, a follow-up farm visit related to a weed infestation of a new stand of forages was made. A huge infestation of weeds was seen in a new stand of forages. After several hours of traversing the farm and talking with the farmer, we knew what the issues was and how to deal with it. But this showed an issue that needed to be addressed. So, with the farmer whole heartedly in support, we decided to host a filed program at his location. The response was better than expected, with about 25 showing up on a cold drizzly evening. We travelled the farm and discussed about 15 identified weeds and how to control them., the last few after dark by the lights of ATVs. The take home rersponse has been very good. Many have told me in subsequet conversation that they either have dealt with these weeds on their properties aor are going to next year at the appropriate time. Hopefull this will help them address the weed issues on their farms correctly and in a timely manner.
