Plan of Work: Strengthen Community, Leadership and Economic Development in Harlan County
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
The Harlan County Extension Homemakers are a very important part of the community within Harlan County. Two clubs that were formed are the Nifty Needles and Material Girls quilting clubs. The clubs currently have a total of 47 members in which most of these members have joined within the last 2 years. The clubs were formed in April 2006 and recently they celebrated their 12 year Anniversary with a dinner and show-n-tell of quilts that they had completed over the years. The quilters host a Quilter’s Day Out each year in which teachers from all over the state come to teach a quilt that they have never gotten the chance to do.
Both groups have performed various service projects each year to help the community. Some of their achievements have been: making wheelchair caddies for Britthaven Nursing Home, quilts and toiletry bags for the VA Hospital, quilts for the VA Hospital, Quilts of Valor for 2 Harlan County Veterans, baby blankets for the Countywide Baby Shower, and monetary donation to Christ’s Hands.
Because of the groups many of the members have entered quilts for judging in local festivals with two of these members being featured quilters at festivals along with numerous members being awarded first place ribbons and best of show prizes in events. With such talented women, they expect an even greater increase in membership over the next year.
