Learning the value of a dollar is something that many people find difficult, especially for youth. The Reality Store, an educational workforce preparation program, was held with 243 eighth-grade students participating. The Reality Store allowed students to get hands-on experience with the realities of life. Students roll play what it would be like to have a monthly income, make spending decisions, be responsible for monthly bills, and provide for their dependents. The Reality Store forced the youth to make realistic decisions that gave them first-hand experience preparing for an employable future. Many teens quickly learned between a basic life necessity and luxury. Some students commented: "I wanted to purchase a new car but had to take care of my kids' daycare; needless to say, I am not driving the new car." "Kids cost a lot more than I ever imagined." Over 74% of the youth evaluated noted they need the education to live the lifestyle they desire as an adult. In addition, 83% said their awareness of making wise financial choices changed due to their participation in the Reality Store. Cooperative Extension Service, 4-H Youth Development agent, with the assistance of the local schools, planned the Reality Store; over 40 volunteers assisted with implementing the Reality Store.
