Major Program: Recipes for Life

Plan of Work: Healthy life style choices make for a happy, healthy life

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The problem - The 2023 Kids Count Data Profile reflects that children in Kentucky, ages 10-17, are overweight or obese. Kentucky ranks 40th in the nation.

The educational program response -  Presentation with handouts, recipe, and samples to the audience about healthy fats - using avocados to prepare delicious snacks and to accompany a healthy meal. Sharing how to pick a ripe avocado, tomatoes, cilantro, & cumin were purchased prior to class. Guacamole was handmade during the presentation using proper cleaning, cutting procedures, placed in small sampler cups and served with tortilla chips.

The participants/target audience -  All ages were welcome. 22 adult women, 1 Amish woman & 3 children attended.

Other partners (if applicable) - Maysville Community & Technical College. There was a large group of vendors/presenters who partnered to make this such a large event for multiple counties.

Program impact or participant response.- 75% of the audience had never tried guacamole and were reluctant to purchase avocados because they didn't know how to prepare them. Once the attendees had sampled the prepared guacamole, they were anxious to try avocados in various ways and expressed their thoughts on how a food they weren't really familiar with could be so healthy.
