Central KY Goat and Sheep Club Growing in Participation and Membership

Author: Chelsea Sapp

Planning Unit: Marion County CES

Major Program: Small Ruminants (includes sheep, goats) and Exotic animals

Plan of Work: Core Program Area: Agriculture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Central Kentucky Goat and Sheep Club has grown exponentially since all meetings and activities were put on hold from 2020 until March 2022 due to Covid and no Ag Agent in Marion County. I first found out about the sheep and goat club through some of its former members wanting to get it started back again. Since then, I have strived to meet on a consistent basis and have guest speakers teach a variety of topics of interest to producers.

With the election of officers and changing and updating by-laws, our group is headed in the right direction. When I held the first meeting over a year ago, only 8 people came. I am pleased to say Central Kentucky Goat and Sheep Club has 42 members which meet on a now monthly basis and regularly attend. Members travel from Marion, Washington, Taylor, Nelson counites to learn how to improve their livestock.

Leadership from officers and increased participation among members now has led this group to plan and host their first sheep and goat field day event scheduled for September 2023. Members are eager to help other producers learn and improve their sheep and goat production. This field day will have guest speakers, different topics being taught at stations and is open to anyone in Marion and surrounding counties.

Central Kentucky Goat and Sheep club now has 42 members – 2 Black males, 20 white males and 20 white females.
