Research shows that having regular mealtime can improve the health of children and adults. In the midst of a hurried world, the investment in family mealtime is well worth the time and effort. In an effort to promote and encourage cooking and eating at home, the Barren County Family and Consumer Sciences agent and the Barren County Program Assistant started The Cooking Collection.
We know that it is easy to get tired, lose your desire to cook and get in a mealtime rut feeling like you eat the same things over and over. The Cooking Collection meets monthly, and participants are working to build their own cookbook. This gives individuals a chance to communicate with others, share family favorite recipes and learn easy kitchen tips and tricks.
Participants are encouraged to bring their family members with them so that everyone can get involved. Sharing tasks and involving the whole family when cooking and eating at home can make preparation and cleanup easier, helps children learn basic knowledge and makes the time more enjoyable.
Of those attending The Cooking Collection in Barren County, ninety percent reported that they have increased the number of meals they cook and eat at home monthly. One hundred percent reported that they have tried a new or different recipe when cooking and eating at home and all participants shared that they would (and have) recommended The Cooking Collection to others.
