Plan of Work: Leadership Skills for Youth and Adults

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Developing experiences for youth to engage with the natural world in new and educational ways is one way Kentucky 4-H can distinguish itself as an organization geared towards positive youth development. Especially important is exposing youth to unfamiliar or novel environments or species. Alongside environmental education, any chance youth audiences can be challenged to develop life skills or soft skills allows 4-H to invest in the next generation of citizens. With these two goals in mind, Areas C1-C4 planned the 4-H Jekyll Island Spring Break Trip. Featuring 81 middle school youth from 15 counties, participants attended an educational day prior to the trip and then travelled to the 4-H Center at Jekyll Island in Jekyll Island, Georgia. While there, 4-H’ers participated in classes focused on the natural environment with an emphasis on marine environments unique to the location. During these classes 4-H’ers were able to observe unique animals and plants, learn about tidal forces reshaping the beach, and participate in hands-on experiences within the ocean. Youth also participated in a group living situations at both a camp facility and hotel, developed interpersonal skills over the course of an extended travel experience and helped manage their own belongings. Upon returning, youth were asked to respond to a brief survey and 24 participated. Of the youth, 100% responded that they had fun, learned something new, are interested in taking trips with 4-H in the future and are interested in learning more about the natural environment. 95% of respondents stated that they got to know a new person from another county and tried a new activity.  One 4-H’er shared, “The trip was awesome sauce!!! I made a lot of new friends, learned that teamwork pays off, saw critters up close, and learned about beach ecosystems.” Another youth said, “All of it was great. I had the best time and learned a lot about the sea life. Best experience…”
