While traveling with youth who are competing for a spot on a team that has been promoted as the pinnacle of success within their area expertise, young people can get a little sideways and forget what is truly important. After several days of practice, it became quite noticeable that certain individuals had let their competitive side swing fully to "I am Better Than You Are". Discussion was had and examples given of knowing the proper ways of doing what each person was supposed to do, encouraging each other to do their best and knowing how to handle success appropriately. A guest speaker was brought in to help resolve this situation. Things improved and hopefully the youth involved learned how to handle this correctly the next time without outside direction.
