The Habitat for Humanity Families Garden received an overhaul with the help of GE’s Local Inclusion Network Connection program in April. Three families had the opportunity to learn some “gardening 101,” such as soil composition and health, companion planting, and mapping out the sun path. The families were enthusiastic to work with three master gardeners and plant what was for some, their first edible garden. Now, they have easy access to a nutritious diet grown by their own hands. Since the planting, it has been a 100% success with the families handling the tending of the gardens via It was said by one participant, "I can’t wait until the tomatoes, squash, and watermelons are flowing from the garden. That makes up a large portion of my summertime meals." The families are looking forward to enjoying their bounty from the garden throughout the season. HFH Families Garden & Program Manager Kevin Kouba had this to say: "The families' garden is a resource for not only our families but the whole Portland Neighborhood. It was great to see so much energy going toward another season of produce."
