The Floyd County 4-H Council decided that family literacy would be an educational focus during the 2017-2018 4-H year. The Floyd County 4-H Program partnered with Betsy Layne Elementary teacher Stephanie Stamper, who is also the Floyd County 4-H Adult Council Secretary to implement the FRED Program which is known for Families Reading Every Day. FRED is a four-week program designed to encourage family’s to read to their children on a daily basis. The target audience for this program was parents, grandparents and siblings of all ages. The program orientation was held during Open house at Betsy Layne Elementary on April 17, 2018. 12 students and their parents signed up to meet the challenge of reading a minimum of 15 minutes a day for the first two weeks and 30 minutes a day for the following two weeks. The students and their parents had a reading log to complete and many surpassed the minimum requirements. This year Emily Fought a fourth grade student was the student who read the most in the month that was designated for the program. Emily read 16 hours and 8 minutes over the four week period. The total amount of time read from all participants was 4,641 minutes (77 hours).Through the exit surveys each parent felt that this program helped to increase the time they spent with their child(ren), helped to improve their child(ren’s) vocabulary, and their relationship with their child. The students and their families were invited back to the school on May 30th for a celebration where they came together to celebrate their success in reading. Students received a medal, certificate, 4-H ribbon and book for completing the program.
