The economic challenges the citizens of Whitley County face and to share some encouraging news regarding the Kentucky State UniversitySmall Farm Conference Eastern Kentucky Style.

Per the 2022 U.S. Census, our community has struggled economically. The per capita income for the past 12 months was recorded at $20,633, and a concerning 27.6% of our population lives in poverty. These statistics indicate our residents' tough times, necessitating concerted efforts to address this pressing issue.

In response to these challenges, the Small Farm Program and Beginning Farmer Project of Kentucky State University collaborated with the University of Kentucky to organize the Kentucky State University Small Farm Conference Eastern Kentucky Style. This two-day event aimed to provide valuable insights and resources to our local farmers and aspiring agricultural enthusiasts. The conference covered a wide range of topics, including Paw-Paw Production, Bee-Hive Management, USDA resources, Financial Management, the Social Impact of farming, rabbit care, and horticulture.

I am delighted to report that the conference was a resounding success. On Friday, April 20, we had 161 attendees, and on Saturday, April 22, we welcomed 214 participants. Over the course of these two days, we were able to make contact with a total of 375 individuals. The conference comprised four educational tracts, which were supplemented by engaging activities such as the Kentucky State University Mobile Processing Unit and the Kentucky State University Bee Autoclave, available throughout the day.

One farmer, Kimberly Shackleford, passionately highlighted the significance of events like the Small Farm Conference, stating, "This is not a want. This conference is a need! We need this with the rising prices of food in grocery stores. A 5-pound bag of flour costs $4.68, and eggs are priced at $3.00. How will people make ends meet without activities such as this?" Kimberly's statement underscores the practical importance of initiatives like the Small Farm Conference in empowering individuals to overcome economic challenges and ensure their financial well-being.

I am particularly excited to share a success story that emerged from the conference. The Kentucky State University plastic layer, a medium-sized plastic layer, was demonstrated during the event. Immediately after the conference, two farmers were so inspired that they borrowed the equipment to lay plastic in their gardens to increase their productivity and contribute to their households' food security.

The collaboration between Kentucky State University Whitley County Extension and the University of Kentucky Whitley County Extension played a crucial role in the conference's success. By working together as a single force, these institutions exemplified the spirit of collaboration and unity, ensuring that the Kentucky State University Eastern Kentucky Conference became a transformative experience for all attendees.

The positive impact of the Kentucky State University Small Farm Conference, Eastern Kentucky Style, cannot be overstated. By equipping our community members with knowledge, resources, and practical tools, we empower them to navigate the current challenging economic circumstances and strive for a more secure future.
