Rising food prices and broader inflation have taken a toll on family budgets. The residents of Fayette County have expressed lots of interest in vegetable gardening as a means to supplement meals and stretch food budgets. Fayette County extension, along with Master Gardener volunteers, LFUCG parks and recreation, Fayette County Public Schools, and NEP staff hosted an event to train inexperienced gardeners to grow vegetables. We titled the event 'Growing Community' and offered it at a William Wells Brown community center in a historically underserved neighborhood. The event was promoted by all partners. Despite less than ideal weather, 101 participants attended 4 educational lessons about gardening and cooking with fresh produce. After attending lessons we provided each person with a garden kit containing our vegetable growing guide, several transplants, and numerous types of seeds. In a follow up survey 92% of those responding indicated they would plant vegetable gardens as a result of the event. In addition 22% indicated this was their first exposure to Fayette County Extension programs. We will continue to offer the event on an annual basis to reach as many neighborhoods as possible with Extension information and resources.
