Kentucky State University’s 4-H Youth Development Program hosted their 2023 4-H Ignite Conference on April 21st. This conference is aimed at Kentucky’s middle school youth. This year, the 4-H team decided the 4-H Ignite Conference’s model would be different than what it was in the past. In the past, the 4-H team determined the workshops, and the participants would attend the predetermined workshops, without being able to choose the workshops that interested them the most. This year, the 4-H team decided to allow the participants to participate in the workshops that interested them the most. There were 6 workshops planned: agriculture, mental health, S.T.E.M., finances, entrepreneurship, and photography. From these 6 workshops, the participants got to participate in 3 workshops and rotate throughout the 3 workshops. There was also a keynote speaker who presented at lunch for the students. The program ended up being a huge success, with 100 youth participants, 10 chaperones, 40 volunteers and 10 extension staff members involved in the program. There was an end-of-program evaluation given to the participants and here were the results of the program: 90% of the youth participants stated they were very satisfied with the 2023 4-H Ignite Conference; 86% of the youth participants agreed that the keynote speaker was engaging and motivated them; 90% of the youth participants agreed that they liked that they could choose the workshops that interested them; and 77% of the youth participants agreed that they would like to participate in more Kentucky State University’s 4-H Youth Development programming. The participants also submitted workshop ideas for future conferences such as: art, a scavenger hunt around campus, and physical activity. The 4-H Team is looking forward to next year’s Ignite Conference, and making the conference even bigger than it was this year.
