Environmental Education Field Day

Author: Toni Humble

Planning Unit: Wayne County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Creating Awareness and Stewardship of Agriculture and Natural Resources

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Fourth grade students at Wayne Co. Monticello Elem. lack understanding and practical knowledge of environmental education and its components. During the 2017-2018 school year teachers are focusing more on getting students to read on grade level than teaching environmental education concepts. Through support of the WCME Principal and the Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp and Education Center, 250 students and 23 teacher/staff from WCME received environmental education.  The EE program reinforced classroom instruction to students during classes focused on Kentucky Mammals, Birds and Streams. In working with local teachers these classes have been identified as "covering a broad range of the natural sciences 4th graders are tested on" and the classes are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. In post camp interviews teachers claim this program is a great enhancement to their classrooms; "It gives the kids a hands on opportunity to see what our environmental science curriculum covers".
