Plan of Work: Increasing Agricultural Systems In Washington County
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Most of the population is at least 2-3 generations removed from the farm. This is why it is important for those involved in agriculture to be proactive in telling their story and sharing what they do, how they do it, and why they do it. Following a good turnout at last year's event, despite the pouring rain, I decided to make this a yearly event for the community so that they have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience with learning how dairy products get from the farm to their table.
This year we expanded the program to include each program area and even more community partners. Activities included the Southland Mobile Dairy Classroom, Inflatables, Butter Making, Lives Cows, Kentucky Kate (a plastic cow for kids to milk), Free Ice Cream, a Paw Paw tree giveaway and educational station, and a visit from Ms. Kentucky! This gave participants the opportunity to learn about the dairy industry and the daily care of cattle and then practice those skills through the various demonstrations available.
This year the program had over 190 participants, almost double from the previous year! Participants ranged from those who have never been on the farm to retired dairy farmers. Each participant was able to leave with a little bit of knowledge and a bowl full of ice cream! We plan to continue hosting this event as an opportunity to educate the community about agriculture and the Extension Offices' role in the community.
