Super Star Chef Camp sparks interest in cooking for youth

Greenup County 4-H Youth Development Agent and Greenup County Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent collaborated to offer the Superstar Chef Camp program to 14 students. 1 volunteer worked with students in a hands-on educational setting to teach important life skills. A pre-test/ post-test evaluation was conducted to determine learning outcomes.
As a result of the program, students gained the following knowledge and skills:
• 50%- identified the right way to hold a knife.
• 35.7%- identified the right way to guide food when using a knife.
• 50%- identified the four steps to safe food.
• 62.3%- identified when to use a meat thermometer.
• 28.6%- identified how many minutes a day they should be physically active to stay healthy.
• 35.7%- recognized the best way to clean fruits and vegetables before eating.
Following the program, students also gained confidence in their food preparation skills:
• 35.7% more students agreed that they could make a meal with fruit.
• 28.6% more students agreed that they could make a meal with vegetables.
• 21.4% more students agreed that they could help make a family meal.
• 35.7% more students agreed that they could measure ingredients correctly.
• 28.6% more students agreed that they could use a recipe with help.
• 28.6% more students agreed that they could use a handheld can opener.
• 28.6% more students agreed that they could cook eggs on a stove.
In addition, as a result of attending the Superstar Chef Camp program, students plan to make the following behavior changes:
• 100% of students can identify healthy foods.
• 92.9% of students plan to drink more water.
• 64.3% of students plan to drink less soda.
• 92.9% of students plan to be more physically active.
• 92.9% of students plan to eat more fruits.
• 85.7% of students plan to eat more vegetables.
• 71.4% of students plan to try new foods.
We had several students that went home and prepared recipes and meals for their family while attending camp. We had several parents express how surprised they were that their child was confident in their ability to cook a meal/ prepare a recipe for their families.
