Author: Mary Beth Riley

Planning Unit: Lyon County CES

Major Program: Substance Use and Mental Health – 4-H Youth Development

Plan of Work: Empowering Youth to Reach Their Full Potential

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to data released through the Kentucky Incentives for Prevention study 17% of 10th graders and 24% of 12th graders reported using an e-cigarette or a “vape” in the past 30 days.  Unfortunately, more and more teens in our area are using vapes and encouraging their peers to use them. It is never too early to start teaching young people about the consequences of tobacco use. The Lyon County 4-H teen club members are passionate about putting a stop to tobacco use and making :Lyon County a healthier place. The Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) program is an anti-tobacco program presented by high school students to 4th and 5th grade students. The teen club members shared messages regarding the marketing of vapes, ingredients of tobacco products, chew tobacco, secondhand smoke information, statistics of tobacco related health issues, and the positive effects of quitting tobacco products. The program was sponsored by the Champions for a Drug Free Lyon County Coalition, a grant by the Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy Coalition, and Lyon County 4-H. Every student that was a part of the program received a TATU t-shirt that had a tobacco free message. A representative from Lyon County Health Department attended the program to encourage students to not use tobacco products. During the TATU program over 120 students’ youth were presented a program regarding tobacco use and 8 teens presented at the program.
