LaRue County Homemakers Enriching Our Culture Through Arts and Crafts

Planning Unit: LaRue County CES

Major Program: Artistic & Essential Skill Development

Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders & Volunteerism

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

From 2017-2021, the LaRue County Cooperative Extension Service was without a Family and Consumer Sciences Agent which in turn caused a decline in Homemaker membership.  During this time, the COVID-19 pandemic was also endured and 2 of LaRue County's 3 Homemaker clubs also dissolved.

Therefore, in an attempt to revitalize the LaRue County Homemakers Association, a committee of active Homemakers created a program that would offer arts and crafts classes to the LaRue County community at times and locations that are more convenient for a younger audience.  Examples of the classes included drawing, basket making and painting.  They were also the recipients of one of the 2022 KEHA Development Grants in order to help get the program off the ground.

Beginning at the LaRue County Fair, 2 classes were offered at the fairgrounds that attracted a total of 20 new participants that had never utilized Extension programming in the past.  This included both youth and adults.  From those 2 classes alone, 5 new homemaker members were recruited and joined the organization.  From there, several more classes were planned and implemented which also included involving the LaRue County 4-H program.

Perhaps one of the greatest accomplishments through this program effort was the development of a new Homemaker Club called Life Around the Table which was developed with an emphasis on crafting and the arts.  Eight new homemakers joined the new group and had their first meeting in September of 2022 meeting 2x monthly.
