The problem

There is a lack of knowledge in the Carroll County community pertaining to raising backyard poultry.

The educational program response

Four members of the Carroll County community attending the Raising Backyard Poultry held at the Carroll County Extension office. Two of these individuals already have some chickens, but were interested in how they could improve their operations, as well as earn a profit. The other two members do not currently own any chickens, and they live in the city limits. The city of Carrollton currently does not allow any poultry in the city limits, so they were coming to educate themselves on how to care for, and what is necessary when owning poultry. They have also started a petition and were wanting to use their education from the raising backyard poultry program to strengthen their case on why they believe that poultry should be able to be raised in the Carrollton City limits.

The participants/target audience

The target audience was for any current small scale poultry owners, as well as beginner poultry owners.

Program impact or participant response.

This program was very interactive, with a lot of conversation between myself, the current chicken owners, as well as the future chicken owners. Everyone was very pleased with the information and were able to use different parts of the program to benefit their specific situation. It allowed the non chicken owners to learn the supplies and housing they need, as well as make contacts on where to get chickens, and get advice from current owners on best practices.
