Increasing Knowledge on Mental Health Topics in a Fun Way

Mental Health is a topic which is increasingly becoming more talked about, and for good reason. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, more Americans than ever are reporting problems with their mental health. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “In February 2021, 43.6% of adults in Kentucky reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. 22.8% were unable to get needed counseling or therapy.” To help address this need, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent in Garrard County held an educational program which was meant to provide information on mindfulness, self-care, and deep breathing while allowing participants to take part in a fun, hands-on activity. The class was a fairy garden class which also educated on the care of succulents. Class started with a presentation on self-care and information about depression, anxiety, and ways to get help if you or a loved one was experiencing them, then participants took part in a deep breathing activity. University of Kentucky publications on these subjects were distributed, and then participants had the chance to create their own container fairy gardens. 17 individuals were in attendance, and 15 participated in the post evaluation. 93% of participants reported an increased knowledge of plant care. 100% of participants reported an increased knowledge or awareness of mental health subjects. Lastly, 100% of participants reported that they plan to use the mental health information they received to help themselves or a loved one. One participant stated “My first time. Love it. Looking forward to more programs.” This was a fun, educational time which hopefully gave Garrard County participants more resources to improve their mental health.
