Over several weeks in early Spring, Jake Daly, a Life scout from Troop 31 of Boy Scouts of America in Fort Wright, KY, diligently worked to improve the Kenton County extension site at 10990 Marshall Road in Covington, KY. Jake has been in collaboration with us over several months planning on what projects could be accomplished at the office to work towards fulfilling the requirements of his Eagle Scout rank. To the benefit of both, great work was achieved. The first task began with the takedown of old potting tables, Jake and his supportive team including his father--who is an Eagle Scout and inspired him to work towards achieving the status—quickly disassembled them. The largest part of the project consisted of creating a new designated bin for mulch to be kept and stored for operations on site. Before this was completed, we lacked space to have for both a compost system and mulch to be stored for future use. Jake kindly donated the materials to build this structure. Finally, the wood supporting the kiosk roof was replaced to help better protect the sign welcoming visitors to our site. The work Jake and his team have done has been of enormous benefit to the Marshall Road office and will continue to play a role in the future in taking care of the gardens and woody plant collection onsite for the future benefit of our arboretum. The relationship built with youth-centered organizations has allowed us to continue to provide opportunities for community based-engagement and beautification opportunities while benefiting our office and site to benefit our county stakeholders.
