4-H Camping

Author: Dianna Reed

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Youth Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Johnson County CEC and Adult 4-H Council identified Youth Life Skill Development as a program priority in the 4 year Plan of Work. To address this need, the 4-H Agent, Extension personnel, 4-H Council, local School FRC's, local businesses and volunteers worked together to secure funding for 4-H Camp Scholarships, provide volunteer training, and recruit youth to attend 4-H Camp. The Johnson County Adult 4-H Council conducted an annual fundraiser which enabled them to offer each child that attended a $100 discount to all youth who attended 4-H Camp making our registration fee $175 instead of the $275 charged by the 4-H Camping program. As a result total of 53 individuals attended an overnight 4-H Camping Session May 30-June 2 at J.M. Feltner 4-H Camp in London, KY. Youth aged 9-14 participated in outdoor activities and camp classes, practiced independence and developed life skills. Teens aged 16-18 provided leadership, assisted with classes, and served as positive role models for younger 4-H youth. when asked about their camping experience, several youth said, "Can't wait until next year, we are coming back!" To finish this summer's program, camp wrap-up is currently underway and camping planning/scheduling for Summer '24 will begin Fall of '23.
