As the percent of the population involved in agriculture continues to decline, there is a great need to share accurate information on food production and provide opportunities across the rural/urban divide. This year the Mercer County Cooperative Extension Service, Farm Bureau Federation, Soil Conservation District and Chamber of Commerce commemorated the 20th anniversary of the annual Farm/City Celebration. This event provides the opportunity to showcase both agriculture and business in our county. We provide information on the variety of agriculture commodities grown and work to address misconceptions about agriculture. This year, around 150 people gathered to celebrate agriculture, industry, small business and our local economy. We recognized those individuals who had attended all 20 farm/city events and added in more local foods this year including ice cream. FFA and 4-H youth leaders assist in different aspects of the event. This years speaker shared thoughts around motivating people and leadership, a topic that was of interest and use to attendees from both our rural and urban portions of the county. Attendees commented this was the best farm/city event we have had to date.
