Lake Cumberland Forage Series

Planning Unit: McCreary County CES

Major Program: Forages

Plan of Work: Livestock/Forage Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Forages are the base nutritional component of most cattle operations in the Lake Cumberland area. Forages are the most economical way for beef producers to put pounds on calves and increase their production. Forage management presents many challenges as well, including: weather, fertilizer prices, weed management, and proper establishment and maintenance.

During the winter of 2023, Russell, Casey, Pulaski, and McCreary counties held a 4 part forage series that was aimed at helping local farmers build better forage stands, mange fertility, control weeds and harvest forages timely to increase quality.  During the series, producers took part in classroom presentations and hands on learning opportunities to help sharpen their skills on forage management from the field to the barn. Four University of Kentucky specialists took part in presenting a topic at each participating county.

Program participants had the opportunity to discuss each class with agents and give feedback on the program. A total of 93 producers attended one/more programs in the series.  After each meeting, participants were asked about each session. Upon completion, 93% of those polled reported learning one/more new tools to use in their operations. 95% of participants said they planned to change one or more practices in their operations after attending the course.
