According to Gifted and Enrichment Coordinator, Gretchen Vaught, Second Street School has Title I status with 100% students receiving free lunch. The Rosenwald Center for 4-H Youth Development gives youth the opportunity to explore lessons in Family and Consumer Sciences. In the state of Kentucky many middle schools do not offer courses in Family and Consumer Sciences. Second Street School is one of those schools. To expose youth to nutrition education opportunities, a 3-month course was offered for a group of 18 students and consisted of 6th-8th graders for a total of 6 contact hours. A pre-post survey was provided with a 5-star rating to measure their comfort level for reading nutrition labels and ability to explain the six nutrients in food, with 1-star represented the lowest and 5-stars representing the highest. Before the program students rated their comfort level for reading nutrition labels at 3.87 stars verses 4.67 stars afterwards and their ability to explain the six nutrients groups in food 3.13 stars verses 4.73 stars afterwards.
