Planning Unit: Robertson County CES

Major Program: National Dining with Diabetes

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Health

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

13.6% of the adult population in Kentucky, have diagnosed diabetes.

As for the 2,131 residents in Robertson County, 12.1 % have been diagnosed with diabetes.

258 people in our small community puts things into perspective just how many that we love and care about are battling this chronic disease.

The Robertson County Extension Office partnered with the Buffalo Trace District Health Department to offer the Dining with Diabetes program.

The program objectives are:

  • Increase knowledge about healthy foods.
  • Provide basic information regarding diabetes, nutrition, and physical activity.
  • Present healthy versions of familiar foods and taste testing of recipes.
  • Provide opportunities for sharing and learning from one another and from diabetes health professionals.

Over the past month we met 4 times as a group covering a wide range of topics. Classes consist of a presentation on diabetes-related topics, a diabetic-friendly meal, an activity, program updates, and so much more.

As a result of these efforts:

-100% said they increased their daily consumption of 2 or more cups of fruit

-100% said they increased their daily consumption of 2.5 or more cups of vegetables

-100% said they chose a source of unsaturated fat for a meal/ snack due to things they learned in this class

100% said they reviewed food labels for nutrition information than before attending

100% said they prepared a balanced meal based on the Plate Method they learned in the class

Each participant left with a set of resistance bands with their last goal to be increase physical activity. I will check back in with them in 6 month to get updated A1C to see if there was an improvement.
