Plan of Work: Build Engaged and Empowered Communities

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Individual quilters have always viewed quilting as a productive use of their time.  As researchers in public health, sociology, and psychology study the positive effects of quilting on those with a passion for quilting, we more fully understand that participants identify that it is important to their wellbeing. “Quilting is challenging, demanded concentration and participants maintained and learned new skills. Participants experience ‘flow’ while quilting.  A strong social network fostered the formation of strong friendships.  Affirmation from others boosted self-esteem and increased positive feelings.” (E,Burt & J. Atkinson, Journal of Public Health, Vol 35, Issue 1, March 2012)

The Jabez Quilt Seminar (JQS) has been sponsored by Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service for the past 23 years.   Extension Agent, Hazel Jackson, has been advising agent to the JQS Advisory Council for22 years.   The most recent (JQS) conference in January 2023 had 128 attendees.  53 of the attendees filled out an evaluation questionnaire to gauge the role that quilting and the JQS plays in their lives.  Of the 53 respondents, 11 attended the conference with a family member and 41 attended with friends. Attendees also cited the following reasons for choosing to quilt:   it provides relaxation after a stressful day or week (35 respondents); it provides social interaction and bonding opportunities with family or friends (33  respondents).
