Author: Garrard Coffey
Planning Unit: Rockcastle County CES
Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Improve Livestock Production and Management Skills
Outcome: Initial Outcome
A series of beef production classes was held at the Rockcastle County Extension office January through March of 2023. These classes included soil testing and fertilizer management for pasture and hay ground, fencing and on farm water, cattle marketing strategies, weed management in pasture and hay ground, and the Rockcaslte County Cattlemen's association annual meeting and banquet where Kentucky Cattlemen's gave and up date on the state association.
On average 36 people attended these meetings and were very involved with the guest speakers. Many great questions were asked and involved discussions were had with specialist on all topics that were presented.
More than 20 producers that attended the soil testing class have turned in over 75 soil samples for improved management of their hay and pastures. After the meetings Dr. Steve Higgins has been invited back for a farm visits to set up a water collection/cattle watering system for one producer. Several other producers have expressed interest in similar projects in our next CAIP cost share program. We now have two shared use equipment pasture sprayers that can be used. With Dr. Greens weed management class 10 producers have taken advantage of these sprayers to help manage weed problems in their pastures.
This has been a very well received series and will be continued in the future.
