Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Girls Empowered and Motivated to Succeed (GEMS) is a program in Henry County for 5th grade girls held after school. The program has 12 participants. The Henry County Cooperative Extension Service was asked to provide hands on lessons for these youth that would build on life skills.  The agents collectively decided that they would offer classes on nutrition, self-care and wellness, social media awareness, laundry and ironing basics, and basic sewing repairs.

During the nutrition program the girls learned about the My Plate model on balancing the 5 food groups.   They made healthy nutrition snacks that could be enjoyed after they get home from school. They also learned about table manners and setting a table correctly. During the self-care session students played fun games to open discussions about ways we can feel and look good.  They enjoyed receiving gift bags of items to try at home.  On laundry day the students learned about reading clothing labels, water temperature, detergents, and dryer settings.  They each learned how to iron a shirt as well. On social media day they learned to protect themselves and be aware of problems that are prevalent for younger audiences.  On sewing day, they learned how to sew on a button by hand and the basics of using a sewing machine.

The director of the program has expressed how the girls are so excited about the programming because they know that when extension is involved it will be hands on and something they can share with others.
