Success StorySTEM/STEAM Club

STEM/STEAM Club

Author: Brian Walker

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

It started as a camp that led to success! As a result from our previous summer camp where 15 participants were able to attend 13 out of the 15 students said after camp that they now have an some interest in STEAM Careers, which indicates that over 75% of a students enjoyed the STEM camp. These results were a increase because when the students took the post survey their results stated that there was a 71% rate of uncertaintly on whether they had an interest in STEM careers. Not only did the results improve in that catergory but based off of the pre-survey result about doing STEM projects the survey also said that out of the 12 students who took the survey 59% of the students had an interest in doing more STEM projects. The success came after the camp where students from the camp and individuals in the area wanted to learn more about STEAM projects therefore, that fall a STEAM Club was started. As a result from the positive STEM Camp we were able to get a couple of the camp participants to join the club and get local volunteers to led the group. As the remainder of the year progressed the students were able to get the club started, elect officers and conduct their meetings. They were able to meet twice a month where they were able to learn about rockets and robotics and other fun STEM related actvities. All the students participating really enjoyed being able to be in a club where they learned how to be in leadership positions, learn about 4-H and how things that turn out to be not fun can turn into great opportunities that can spark their interest.
