Sewing 101

Author: Lisa Jones

Planning Unit: Whitley County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Arts and Creativity

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Learning how to sew is a practical exercise in engineering and construction. Studies have revealed that students who learned to sew even a simple project displayed an increase in creativity after the activity. This skill can also provide a fulfilling and stress-relieving hobby for those who learn it. During the program, youth received an introduction to sewing and learned basic hand stitches and embroidery techniques. After learning parts of the sewing machine, they were instructed on how to sew straight lines, curves, and corners using a sewing machine. They also learned the importance of safety when working with tools and equipment.

Their final assignment involved using the machine to stitch together a travel-sized pillowcase. 66% of the youth who participated in the program learned how to sew for the first time, and every one of them successfully completed a project for the upcoming 2023 County fair. 83% of youth were more confident in working with sewing machines and were willing to help others.  The winners of this category will then be eligible to compete at the state fair, offering a wonderful opportunity for these budding sewers to showcase their abilities and gain recognition for their hard work.
