Reality Store for High School Seniors

Author: Mary Lawson

Planning Unit: Menifee County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Reality Store program, where students and young adults can get a glimpse of what future responsibilities can look like. Allowing students to think critically, practice decision making, and get a better understanding of what adulthood will intel depending on their life choices. The 4-H reality store program is usually allotted with grades sixth through eighth. This time we introduced the reality store program to high school seniors. We thought students would benefit from this program considering they are entering the workforce and majority will be on their own within the year. Students were able to virtually run through the reality store program under an hour, some students completed it twice to earn a better score the second time. High school seniors completing this program learned the value of the dollar, learned how to budget money, learned what bills will have to be paid as an adult, and how life choices can affect not only their financial situation but their life as a whole.
