The Webster County Extension Council identified life skills as a need for the citizens of Webster County. Life skills promote mental well-being in young people and equips them to face the realities of life. Life skills are “abilities for adaptive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life” (WHO, 1997, p.1). The Extension Service can provide programming in areas that will enable children, youth, and adults to develop life skills that will help them make informed and effective decisions to improve their quality of life.
The Webster County Extension Service summer 4-H camp provides multiple opportunities for youth throughout the week to experience personal growth in life skills. Youth gain communication skills, learn new things, make new friends, learn to make decisions and work in a group, but also appreciate what they have at home. Teens and adults have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, learn new things, develop friendships and gain satisfaction of accomplishment. Trained, caring adult role models help children feel loved, capable and included. Camp provides children with a safe, supervised, positive environment, which helps children, grow.
