Plan of Work: Fostering Life Skills Education in Youth and Families

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Bullying has been recognized as a pressing issue in the local middle schools. The 4-H Agent and Extension Program Assistant were asked to create and present a lesson on bullying to 7th graders. The program utilized the Safe & Caring Schools: Activities for Building Character and Social-Emotional Learning curriculum. Activities and exercises were put together so youth were up and moving as well as sitting and thinking. They were given a safe space to discuss bullying. The program included a definition matching game, a bully survey, how does a bully act/look/sound wall sticky note activity, advanced bullyology (youth listed their physical, emotional, and verbal reactions to certain situations), and finished with an evaluation. 95% of youth reported they were more prepared to help others who needed support. 93% of youth reported that it takes courage and a plan to stand up to a bully but you must be safe when doing so. 100% of youth were able to correctly define a bully and 96% of youth were able to correctly define teasing. Youth also wrote responses to the following question: What would you say to someone who thinks it is cool to spread rumors, write messages, or do other things to bully kids at school? Here are some of their responses: “You need to let them know that there is no fun or reason to do that, and it is very wrong to be mean to others for no reason.” “I would ask them why they want to hurt other kids or tell them if they have problems at home or school they can talk to someone.” “I would tell them that they need to stop or I will inform the proper authorities/adult.” “There is no reason in bringing others down.”
