The Perfect Protein featuring “Egg -cellent Basics.
At Baker Intermediate the LEAP and Teen Cuisine programs were introduce d t o 18 eager
students wanting to learn more about cooking . T his was a great opportunity to teach them
the basics of using a portable burner and skillet. T he director revealed t hat they reviewed
the lesson plans and decided to do the "Scrambled Eggs ””.
While preparing, it was discussed that eggs were the prefect protein to have at any time of
the day . Kitchen Safety was a huge factor for them they ha d never used a burner or skillet .
After the lessons were taught it was time to measure properly to make a perfect scramble d
egg.
One student stepped up to make his eggs and as he whispered that he hadn't cooked
anything in his whole life, this was the right time to assure him that he could do it . Hesitant
to break the eggs, setting the right temperature , and placing the skillet on the burner
exactly right , he was ready to begin .
He broke the egg, measured two tablespoons milk, ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper to the bowl
he whisked the ingredients together , testing the skillet while holding his hand above to feel
the heat . As he poured in t he egg mixture , it started cooking immediately as he was
instructed to push and pull from the sides so they didn't scorch .
He was so pleased, he quoted : "I did it, I can make breakfast for my family after taking this
class, I am so proud of myself trying some thing new."
The smile on his face was priceless.
The students received the booklet to try other amazing recipes from Leap and Teen Cuisine
where 15 out of the 18 students planned to do several recipes for their families when they
got home.
