Outcome: Initial Outcome

On March 2nd, 2023, Extension Agriculture Agents from the Purchase and Pennyrile collaborated to offer a program entitled, "Pasture Please." This unique program offering was geared towards equine owners who manage their own pastures. The goal was to give these owners research-based recommendations pertaining to horse pasture renovation. After the drought conditions endured during the 2022 growing season, the host agents knew this topic would be in high demand.

The agenda featured three guest speakers including Dr. Witt, former UK Weed Specialist, Dr. Teutsch, UK Forage Specialist, and Dr. Coleman, UK Equine Specialist.
Topics included “Controlling Pasture Weeds after a Drought,” “Rescuing Pastures by Seeding Annuals,” and Managing Pastures after a Drought.”

35 equine owners attended “Pasture Please.” Many of which asked questions and jotted down notes while absorbing the information presented. The learning didn’t end with the last speech, as many conversations continued after the class. Participants stayed to discuss their operations, struggles and how this information could be used on their own farms with the agents and specialists. Christy, one of the program participants from Marshall County, stated that she “gained insight particularly in pasture management, which will be helpful for both my horses and cattle management.”

The host agents plan to continue allocating time and resources, in order to assist equine owners like Christy with their operations.
