Author: Jason Phillips

Planning Unit: Simpson County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Agriculture Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Simpson and Butler County Extension Agents for Agriculture developed a beef cattle management program that would be held exclusively on Zoom video conferencing technology.  The program was titled, “Beef Cattle Management Short Course” and was comprised of a 3-part series in the months of January and February with each topic featuring University of Kentucky forage and agronomy specialists.  The session titles were as follows:  “Genetics, EPDs, and Genomic Testing: tools producers can use to increase profits”, “A Proper Nutrition Program for Heifers”, and “Reproductive Management in Beef Cattle”.  Simpson and Butler County Extension Agents, with clientele input, planned, implemented, and evaluated this program.  Evaluations were presented on Qualtrics at the end of each session.  There were 30 farms registered (via zoom online registration) for this program from Simpson, Butler, and Warren Counties.  Registration information revealed that just over 1800 head of cattle were managed by the farmers participating in the program.   Average attendance was 25 connections.    Additionally, post meeting evaluations revealed that:  86% of participants responded that they will use the information they learned in their farming operation this year.  100% increased their knowledge of the topics presented.  A local veterinarian that participated commented the following:   “Great webinar, I hope someone recorded it”.  -another producer reported that after Dr. Van Valin’s program his wife came in with trace mineral salt block.  He compared the tags with loose mineral she recommended and realized that there wasn’t enough mineral in the salt blocks to change the color. One Simpson County producer sent blood samples to a lab in Smith's Grove for pregnancy checking based on recommendations from Dr. Anderson during the "Reproductive Management in Beef Cattle" session.
